John (aka the Squire).
John is the proud owner of the Touchdown Lounge. John got the nickname
“Squire” as a shortened version of “Esquire”. An avid Patriots fan,
John has followed the Pats since a young boy attending a couple
of games each year. Those were the years of Mini Mack Herron, Sam
Bam Cunningham, Randy Vataha and, of course, Steve Grogan. In fact,
as 17-year old high school seniors, John and a buddy even attended
the infamous 1976 Monday Night game versus the Jets (the Pats demolished
the Jets 41-7) (what were his parents thinking?). That game was
so wild it lead to an almost 20 year ban on Monday Night Football
games in Foxboro. When he moved to the Boston area in 1988, John
discovered the weekly TV blackouts (those were the days before 100
plus consecutive sellouts and a 50,000 season ticket holder waiting
list.) The Solution when he could not attend games in person – regular
Sunday afternoon trips to New Hampshire to watch the game at his
in-laws (and to think, at first John’s wife thought he was just
being a good husband and son-in-law).
Along with Lou and Crash, John became a season ticket holder in
1994. Since that time, John has attended every home game (including
the playoffs in 1996, 2001 and 2003) except for the opening day
game in 2000 when he helped move Michael into College (thank god
it was an away game when Kristin moved into College).
As soon as he became a season ticket holder, a tailgate maniac
was born. John was the guy who was responsible for bringing all
of the tailgating gear and is a firm believer that just because
you are in a parking lot, does not mean that you should not be comfortable
and eat well. From the outset, John started constructing his tailgating
gear. First up was a 36 x 24 Patriot blue wooden field kitchen (with
a hand painted “Flying Elvis” logo) to hold the propane stove and
all of the various tailgating supplies (plates, cups, cutlery, etc.).
Each season, John acquired more gear, portable tables, gas grills,
a heater for cold weather games, lanterns and a pop-up canopy. To
carry all of this gear, John built a blue 20” x 60” wooden tailgate
box which was carried on a tailgate rack.
For John, the TD Lounge is a tailgating dream and a great way to
show off his Patriots’ pride (the walls are covered with autographed
memorabilia – many personalized for the TD Lounge). Actually, some
folks think he simply got tired of having to empty out his truck
of all of the tailgating gear after each game. With the TD Lounge,
he simply parks it in the driveway.
